The electric fence works on electricity. The black grounding cable connects the grounding rods to the energizer. The red cable connects the fence to the energizer. Finally, the battery cables connect the energizer to the battery, which provides the power supply. The current passes through the energizer, through the fence, and through the grounding rods (the earth is used to complete the circuit).

The electric fence energizer converts the incoming power from a 12V battery or from a solar panel into a high-voltage pulse. The energizer sends this pulse through an insulated line made of rope, tape, wire, mesh, or other types of conductive material with specific characteristics. This happens once every second or, depending on the model, it can be adjusted. The pulse itself has a duration of 150 microseconds.

This pulse is commonly called a “shock pulse” and it is what the animal feels when it touches the electric fence. The diagram shows the movement of the pulse through the system. The pulse starts from the energizer. It passes through the wire and enters the animal that has touched the fence. The pulse passes through the animal and goes into the ground. From there it returns to the energizer through the grounding rod.

Think of the electric fence more as a psychological barrier rather than a physical one. The pain experienced by the animal is momentary and does not physically harm it, similar to barbed wire fences or other types of enclosures.

Some advantages of electric fencing:
Low investment cost – it requires very few materials and labor compared to a standard fence. Not to mention a shepherd!
Long service life – it can be used for many years with proper maintenance;
Easy installation – relatively few and mostly lightweight components;
Universal – can be used for all types of animals, both domestic and wild;
Extends the life of an already deteriorating fence – if you install one or two lines in front of a damaged fence, you can use it much longer without worrying that animals will further destroy it;
Minimal maintenance – no servicing required. It only needs occasional checking to ensure it is working. If a remote monitoring device is installed, even this is not necessary.
